Robert grew up on Long Island,NY and in Winston-Salem,NC. His first
exposure to music was with his uncles Herman and Irving Lang who were
both professional jazz bass players in NYC. He was always fascinated with
his uncle's cool upright bass resting in the hallway of their apartment
and the really cool Ampeg B-15 amp.
It wasn't very long before Robert acquired a cheap steel string
acoustic guitar and taught himself to play a few chords. Robert's
earliest musical influences were,of course, the Beatles, the immortal Jimi
Hendrix and the Blues-influenced sounds of Cream. This is where his love
of the electric guitar began. Robert soon found himself playing guitar
with his new red Hagstrom in a teen band called The Shadows of Thyme. The
band was very successful over a number of years;at first playing teen
dances and frat parties and working their way up to open for more famous
bands who played in the area.
When the Shadows of Thyme broke up,Robert returned to playing mainly
acoustic guitar. After he finished college,he settled in Virginia where
music had to take second place to raising children and starting his
antique restoration business. Years of playing in the living room and
jamming with friends paid off when he got together with Steve Hajnos and
the band “Olds-Kool” got started. Robert loves playing both bass and electric guitar
with the band. Thanks to Uncle Herman and Uncle Irving!, No one
should be allowed to have this much fun!
